AWS Cloud Ops Engineer Associate

AWS certifications evolve over time to stay aligned with the needs of cloud professionals and the rapid pace of AWS service development. One of the latest updates is the rebranding of the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator Associate certification. Starting September 30, 2025, this exam will be renamed the AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer Associate (SOA-C03).

If you’re planning to certify or recertify, you may be wondering what has changed and how this impacts your study plan. In this article, we’ll walk you through the details so you can approach your exam with confidence.

Why AWS rebranded SysOps Administrator to CloudOps Engineer

The SysOps Administrator Associate has long been one of the core associate-level certifications, focusing on deploying, managing, and operating workloads on AWS. However, AWS decided to rebrand the certification as CloudOps Engineer Associate to better reflect the evolving responsibilities of professionals in operations roles.

It’s important to note that this is not a completely new exam. Instead, it’s a rename and update of the existing SysOps certification. Most of the content remains the same, but AWS has made some adjustments to the domains, expanded coverage of certain services, and officially included topics that were previously in a grey area.

Key exam details

Here are the main facts about the new SOA-C03 exam:

  • Exam level: Associate
  • Length: 130 minutes
  • Number of questions: 65
  • Passing score: 720 out of 1000
  • Cost: $150
  • Delivery method: In-person testing center or online proctored
  • Availability: From September 30, 2025

The format remains unchanged: you’ll face multiple-choice and multiple-response questions. The hands-on labs from the earlier SysOps exam were retired in March 2023 and remain retired. This keeps the exam consistent with other associate-level certifications.

Exam code changes

The previous SysOps exam carried the code SOA-C02. The new CloudOps Engineer exam is labeled SOA-C03. This is essentially a version bump – signaling the new name and refreshed content.

Domains: old vs. new

One of the notable changes is how AWS has reorganized the content domains.

  • The SysOps Administrator exam (SOA-C02) used to have 6 domains.
  • The CloudOps Engineer exam (SOA-C03) now has 5 domains.

AWS consolidated and shifted some topics. For example:

  • Performance optimization has been moved into Domain 1.
  • Cost optimization no longer appears explicitly in the domain list. While this doesn’t mean cost management is irrelevant, AWS has de-emphasized it in favor of a stronger operational and engineering focus.

Overall, the domains remain very similar, and if you’ve been studying for SysOps, your preparation is still highly relevant.

New services added

The biggest content change comes in the form of new services. Approximately 25 additional AWS services are now in scope for the SOA-C03 exam. This is consistent with how AWS updates all certification exams – they regularly expand coverage to reflect the latest services and features being adopted in real-world operations.

Some key highlights include:

  • Containers officially included – ECS, EKS, and ECR are now formally part of the exam guide. These services occasionally appeared in exam questions before, but they were listed as “out of scope.” Now they’re officially tested.
  • Database and analytics services – Tools like Amazon Managed Grafana and Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus are now in scope.
  • Networking and operational insights – Expect more coverage of flow logs, reachability analyzer, and monitoring/tracing services.

AWS hasn’t removed any services compared to the older version – they’ve only added more. This means your study plan needs to expand to cover these additional services.

What hasn’t changed

It’s important to keep in mind that while AWS has added new content, most of the exam remains the same. The core focus is still on the operational aspects of running workloads on AWS: monitoring, automation, troubleshooting, and ensuring secure and efficient operations.

The exam format, pricing, duration, and passing score are unchanged. If you were already preparing for the SysOps Administrator exam, you won’t need to start over. You’ll just need to account for the additional services and slight domain restructuring.

The role of unscored questions

As with other AWS exams, the CloudOps Engineer exam includes unscored pilot questions. These don’t count towards your score but are used by AWS to test new content.

You won’t know which questions are scored and which aren’t, so treat every question seriously. However, if you encounter a question that feels especially difficult or unfamiliar, don’t panic – it may be one of the unscored pilot questions. Keep moving and focus on answering all questions to the best of your ability.

How to prepare for SOA-C03

If you’re planning to take the CloudOps Engineer exam, here’s how to prepare effectively:

  1. Start with the exam guide

Always review the official AWS exam guide. It lists the domains, weightings, and in-scope services. This will help you identify any gaps in your study plan.

2. Use updated study materials

Make sure your training content is fully updated for the new exam. At Digital Cloud Training, our AWS CloudOps Engineer Associate course and practice exams are aligned with the latest SOA-C03 exam guide.

3. Focus on new content

Pay attention to the additional services, especially container services and operational insight tools. These are areas where exam questions are likely to appear.

4. Practice hands-on

While the exam doesn’t require labs anymore, hands-on experience is still critical. Use the AWS Free Tier to practice deploying, managing, and troubleshooting resources.

5. Test your knowledge

Use practice exams to simulate the real test environment. This helps you get comfortable with the format, identify weak areas, and build confidence before the exam day.

What this means for cloud professionals

For cloud professionals, the rebranding of SysOps to CloudOps Engineer highlights the shift in AWS roles from traditional system operations to more modern cloud operations. Organizations are increasingly relying on cloud engineers who can manage performance, reliability, monitoring, and automation at scale.

The new exam outline reinforces these priorities by expanding coverage of container services, observability tools, and networking capabilities. These skills are essential for operating production workloads in real-world cloud environments.

SOA-C03 at a glance

The renaming of the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator Associate to the AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer Associate (SOA-C03) reflects AWS’s effort to keep certifications aligned with evolving industry roles. While the exam has a new name and expanded scope, most of the content remains familiar to anyone already studying for SysOps.

The biggest updates are the addition of around 25 new services, the inclusion of container technologies, and some restructuring of domains. This makes the exam more reflective of today’s operational responsibilities in cloud environments.

For candidates, the message is clear: don’t worry about starting from scratch. If you’ve been preparing for the SysOps Administrator exam, you’re already most of the way there. Just make sure to update your preparation plan, review the new exam guide, and cover the additional services that are now in scope.

With updated study resources and hands-on practice, you’ll be well-prepared to pass the CloudOps Engineer Associate exam and validate your ability to operate workloads on AWS.
