There are no prerequisites to sit any AWS exam. However, the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional exam is a difficult exam that requires deep knowledge of a broad range of AWS services.
For those who do not have significant experience working with AWS technologies, it is recommended that you first pass the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate before attempting the professional architect exam.
Generally speaking, it’s highly advantageous to complete all three associate-level AWS certifications first. This will give you a solid base of knowledge over subject areas that are likely to come up in the AWS Solution Architect Professional exam.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs Professional Certification
Both the AWS Solutions Architect Associate and Professional Certifications are aimed at individuals who perform a solutions architect role. The key difference between these certifications is the depth of knowledge required and the difficulty of the questions in the exam.
While the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional certification covers a similar range of AWS services as the associate level (both are quite broad in scope) – at the professional level you’ll find you need a much deeper understanding of the following:

How should you prepare for the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional exam? This is not an easy task and requires careful planning to ensure you’re fully prepared before you attempt this challenging exam.

How tough is the AWS Solution Architect Professional exam?
We are often asked how difficult the AWS Solutions Architect Professional exam is and how it compares to associate level exams. The AWS Architect Professional exam is quite a big step up from the associate level. In the professional exam you can expect longer scenario-based questions with more complex situations presented. The answers can also be quite long and some of the more difficult questions can take several minutes to answer.
You must be very careful of your time in the exam as you have 180 minutes to complete the 75 questions. That means you only have around 2 ½ minutes per question and with some questions being very tricky you’ll need to make sure you watch the clock!
Make sure you have a solid understanding of the subject matter before sitting this exam. We recommend you first do all three associate-level certifications (the Solutions Architect Associate at a minimum) and complete our practice tests multiple times until you’re exceeding 80%.
What is the passing score of the AWS Solutions Architect Professional exam?
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional passing score is 750 points out of 1000 (75%). There are 75 exam questions and you get 180 minutes to complete the exam. The question type is multiple choice and multiple response.
You can take the SAP-C02 exam in a testing center or using an online proctored exam from your home or office. If English is not your first language you can request an accommodation when booking your exam that will qualify you for an additional 30 minutes exam extension.
How much does the AWS Solutions Architect Professional certification cost?
The AWS Solutions Architect Professional exam cost is $300 USD. If you have previously passed another AWS certification exam, make sure you apply your 50% discount voucher.
